So far in this chapter, we have focused on Oracle performance monitoring tools. However, performance problems often occur outside the Oracle environment at the operating system, network, or storage level. It is therefore important to understand the information provided not only by the Oracle performance monitoring tools, but also by the standard operating system monitoring tools available on Linux. You can use the information provided by these tools to complement and support the findings from Oracle tools to fully diagnose RAG performance. A number of GUI-based performance monitoring tools operate in the Linux environment, such as GKrellM. We recommend investigating GKrellM and other open source GUI programs when building of portfolio of operating system tools to complement EM. In keeping with our approach to Oracle performance monitoring, however, we believe that your level of expertise \nl\ benefit significantly from being familiar with the underlying statistics used by many of these tools. For this reason, our focus here is on the most commonly used command line operating system monitoring tools available with all Linux distributions.
